40hp Johnson to 9.9hp Evinrude/Johnson

My pontoon currently has a 2000 40hp Johnson with top mount OMC controls, elec. tilt/trim, gauges. Would the controls and ignition be compatible if I swapped it for an Evinrude/Johnson 9.9hp? Or atleast close enough with some minor changes

I'm asking because I also have a Merc 9.9hp installed as a kicker and have been considering selling the 40hp and using just the 9.9hp (I'm on restricted waters), but converting my helm from Johnson to Merc would cost about $1,000 and some down time out of the water. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner but why not sell/trade the Merc 9.9 and the Johnson 40 for a like branded 9.9 instead? That way I don't have to convert my helm and can make the swap in a day or so's time.

i found a merc controller on e bay for 150 when i converted to a 9.9

Controls typically go with the motor. Not as bad as it sounds, as you will probably have an easier time selling the 40 (and more $$), and and easier time finding controls after you settle on a 9.9 model. Later models will have a tilt tube for steering hook up. I use a single lever controller for my 9.9 throttle and shift (trolling motor), and kept the electric start button at the motor -- works out fine for me. Probably a good idea to take a trip to a dealer and see what a full remote setup would involve with one of the new 9.9s.

See, I asked in another forum what I would need to swap the Johnson for the Mercury. One guy came back with of everything I would need - controls, ignition, cables, gauges, harnesses, etc. I already have most of that in my side mount controls except for the top mount binnacle and Mercury gauges.

The list was all Gen II. I don't know what my side mount stuff is, if it is Gen I or II. It's Quicksilver model #881170A12, and the power cable is 84-892329A01 if that helps. I don't have a number for the cables though. If I knew what Gen they were and if I knew I could disassemble the side mount and use them in the helm I'd do that instead. I'd need to know which binnacle would work too (I know there's tons of them).
