Ive got a 1985 35hp Evinrude govt motor, and would like to squik a little more HP out of it. Would replacing the reeds and carb from a 40HP acomplish this. Im assuming they both have the same displacement, but not positive. Thanks in advance.
The 35 and 40 are ENTIRELY different motors. About the only part they share are the lower unit drain plugs. No way you can swap the intake stuff...
The 35hp twins are already pretty high strung motors and getting more out of them is a sure way to guarantee needing a new motor in short order...
Best thing to do is to make sure you're getting the advertised horsepower up front. Have you put a tach on the motor to see if it is spinning to high end of the rated range (about 5500 RPM)? Is compression good and even? Prop is in perfect shape and is correct for load and conditions? Other option is to find a 40 in the first place...
