Guys,
I took my boat, (40hp RDSL23), out and twice the engine screamed and felt like it came out of gear. so i checked the lower unit gear oil, which was grey. More worrying is when i re-filled it i could see some frothy milky oil coming out of exhaust port. any ideas?

I don't think the prop is original as it came with a beaten up one. from what i remember there is no nut just a dowel through the shaft and prop. then a plastic cap over the top of the dowel with a split pin, but i'll check.

i'm not sure on the "electirc shift circuit". to put this engine in gear i move the lever on the side. What does it look like?

I just put in some marine gear oil from wal-mart that said it was ok for johnson ouboards. Do i need to change that?

Any thoughts on the oil from the lower exhaust port. as i previously said the used lower unit oil looked grey and the new oil was golden but this was milky frothy oil.

thanks in advance for for help.

If your gearcase is rather blunt with a removeable bottom half disregard the electric shift info.If the gear case is a sleek pointed torpedo shape it is an electric shift and requires a special oil.
Regarding gray oil this could indicate water in the oil.
Run it a little and recheck the oil.Should be roughly the same color as when new.probably a little darker.
Oil in the exhaust is usually simply exhaust residue.

i think it must be the "rather blunt", as its a split casing with a ring of slotted screws.

i apologize and am sorry to labour the point, but is there no seal or a cracked casing or something which could have broken down and is now allowing gear oil into the exhaust port just above the prop?

please bear with me as im very new to boating.

thanks in advance.

Guys,
could the foamy milky oil coming out of the lower exhaust be an indication of a cracked cylinder head?
