OK when i barell test the motor everything is just fine. Forward reverse and nutral. But when im out in the lake underway Wot it will slip into nutral. But if i give it a little gas and walk to the motor i can hold it forward more than the cable does and it will stay in gear. Only if i hold it though.

I had to recently replace a bolt in the lower unit / upper shaft conector

Is there a posibility i dident have the lever in the right position when i conected the rods? Is there a proper procedure ?

Oh and the lever is a little sloppy too. Is there away to tighten it?

Model is an RD250 i think it is a long shaft or there is an extention put on it.

Which by the way how do i know if i can remove the extension ? And is there a way to know if its an extesion or if it was built that way?

Thanks sorry for all the questions

Re: 40hp super sea horse

you didn't mention the year, but I assume early/mid sixties.

The shift rod is adjustable- there is a procedure in the manual. I used to have a manual but lost track of it after I sold the last old Johnson I had. You should fix it asap as improper adjustment will wear out the shift dog/coupler. The rod acts on a yoke which moves at a ratio - very little adjustment on the rod will effect a big change at the shift dog itself.

The leg of the motor will have a removable extension, but if I remember correctly, the drive shaft and shifter rod are full-length pieces, so you can't just drop a few parts out and bolt it back together if that was what you were thinking.

Shifter tension is adjusted at the helm-end controls.

Hope this helps, Mark
