well.. From what i gather reading the limited information about these here is they are cranky, but i have one anyways. seems to be in good shape, but sat unused, and i can't see any decent spark. Does anyone know if this is a typical johnson points setup and are they easily cleaned without going too crazy?

Had this apart last night, and the points system is wacky..Vertical on the outside setup..If there is a name for this setup that anyone is familiar with, please let me know. Has black coils that appear to be in good shape. Hopefully i can figure out a way to test for spark at the coil.

The earliest manual I have is for the HD-25. Try posting this question at the AOMCI.org website. They deal with the older engines.

Thanks sam.. i was able to dissasemble the points and ignition system enough to get a good grip on it. If anyone needs a lowdown on how these old johnsons are set up, i can give a few nice clues. Anyhow..i was able to take a very delicate 5 part point system apart and em them cleaned up. And my spark tester is a pos, so i had to grab the plug wires to see if spark was present. It was.. but not to the point it made me jerk away quickly. tugged it after spraying some heavy mix into the bottom cylendar, and it coughed. So i put her in a barrel and tugged again. Pull rope got hung up, and during the investigation process, the spring came unseated and gave me 5 large dollar sized welts on my chest. ok.. after a trip to the hardware store, i was able to find a bit to fit my drill to turn her over. After the cordless drill bit the dust, i found the electric, and got it spinning. Ran for 5 seconds..and eventually, 10 seconds. Hope spinning it quickly with the drill didn't overload something. I am amazed at the inginuity of the designers of these old outboards..if it werent for gaskets, and morons, they would run forever. If i do get it running well, i will post again.

forgot to add..in between this spectacle, i was able to dissasemble a 3 horse gamefisher to the points systemto clean that, and fired up that old air cooled loud thing to a smooth running condition. so i may be some help on the old tanaka gamefishers as well.
