I bought a 1981 Wellcraft Nova with a 454 Chevy engine on Saturday. I tried hooking up earmuffs to the lower unit in order to winterize the engine. I ran the engine for 10 minutes and noticed a considerable amount of smoke coming from the engine. There was no water coming into the engine because the water supply from the lower unit that comes through the transum was cut and had a shut off valve attached to the end. I opened the valve and a poor stream of water was coming out. The way this cooling system is hooked up there is a stainless steel L pipe with an inch diameter that is screwed on to the back of the transum close to the v-line centre of the boat which sucks water to the oil cooler and to the rest of the engine. My question is due to the size of the engine, is this why this method of cooling was chosen? If I was to repair the lower unit could it there be a sufficient amount of water flow to cool this engine?
Thanks.

I can't quite figure out What you've got for a cooling System......
But, If you ran this motor for 10 minutes Without Water... I'm Betting you've got a Bunch of New Overheat Problems Now......

What Outdrive is attached to this motor ??????

Its an alpha . I started the engine again and had it runing for about 20min but with the garden hose inside the 1 inch pipe thats sticks out of the transum, and another hose with muffs to the lower unit. There was water coming from the exaust when the engine was runing.

Hello
could be some one has modified the water intakes. does the engine by chance have a belt driven seawater pump. I see a lot of repowers the use a seperate thruhull fitting to draw cooling water and either block off the water from the lower unit or blow it out the side.seems to me I recall a water scoop intake that really only worked well at speeds that came from the transom. time to find a competent tech that can tell you what you have.because a 454 with an alpha drive is not good. the drive cannot handle the power. keep you boat us or seatow paid make sure your VHF is working and keep your cell phone handy.
good luck and keep posting

The water pickup is standard issue on a 454 engine. It will not be aftermarket. The input line should run to a seawater pump. Then to the engine.

TMD
