Hello i have a high compression 400 hp 454 engine. i just purchased a 1000 cranking amp battery. unless that battery is showing 13 amps or higher it wont turn the engine and the flywheel kicks back and either jams the starter or breaks it! how can i keep that battery steady at 13amps or higher all the time???

Is the started "heavy duty"????
If not, you'll probably burn it up like the other ones. A normal starter just isn't strong enough for the high compression engine.

I am not sure. after i burned up the first one i got it from advanced auto parts. i asked if it was strong and they said it was for truck engines and that it was the strongest they had. cost me about $200.00

I'm sure.... sounds like you need to find an old pro who is familiar with high compression engines and starters.
You won't find one at Advanced Auto... might at Napa.
I'd repost here and ask (In the Topic section) "Is there a heavy duty starter for a High Compression 400hp 454 engine" ...... and then describe again what you have been going thru.
Hopefully there is an "old pro" out there who has gone through this and can help.

If it snaps off the drive end housing, I suspect you have an initial timing issue. A standard small case gear reduction type starter, stock issue on most Mercury BBC stern drive applications is plenty sufficient to crank a 400hp BBC. The same starter comes on the 500,525,575,600 and 800sc engines. Verify the ignition timing before buying another starter. Also check the firing order to make sure you are not cross firing a cylinder on the intake stroke and forcing the engine backwards.
