Looking at this connector I'm curious why there is a jumper built into the connector. I feel like its supposed to be there but I know base timing mode uses a jumper and my idle is about 1600 rpm. Cant find it in the manual unless your trying to put the engine in base timing mode.

No Title

In there I also found these connectors that appear to have cut connectors on them....they are zip tied together and just hanging....I believe them to be fuses but why do they look like they have cut cables?

The DLC one in first post is there so the cap is not lost when removed, so it is as it should be

The second post may be plugs that are not used but will need to know what the wire colors are to have a chance to figure out what they , may or may not be used for

+1 with the wire between the DLC connector and cap....Some models had the outside ran wire so the cap won't get lost.

The two with what appear to be cut wires were for "spare" fuse holders...The cut wire look was more meant to be a "plug" so the electrical weather pack cap seals up better....Along with giving an indication that something electrical was inside such as a fuse..< As just to be more sure, there isn't any other wires connected to the other/bottom side of them Correct?

So when you start your engine the RPM immediately revs to 1600 RPM? First make sure the throttle body is closing via the throttle cable and by looking at the throttle body plates when/by removing the flame arrestor cover.

Then if you don't have a scan tool handy then try following this method to see if there are any fault codes showing up within the ECM....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSEwwa6D2jM

What year is your engine?

You are correct no other wires connected to the fuses.

Actually the boat revs to 2000 and quickly drops to 1600 and stays there. The engine is a 1996 454 mag. I'm gonna watch the video. I Don't have a scan tool. I have however made sure the plate was closed but i purged lots of water from the fuel line. I'm hoping there's more in there causing the higher idle. I have a lower pickup only lower so I'm waiting for a special muff for a v cone so i don't have to figure out all the plumbing for a hose to the water pump.

Ok just watched the video and that will be great info. I found out how to determine which mefi system i have. I noticed there are two dlc type connectors in there.... which one to i pick?

Being an 1996 you'll likely have the MEFI 1 but could be # 2 too....They didn't use the #5.;)

The DLC photo above should have 5 or maybe 6 wires running to it....The 6th wire if there on that DLC should a yellow wire....If not then the other connector you may be seeing would have the yellow wire....< "Possibly" without seeing the connector and wiring colors in question.)

Next time you start the engine you'll want to use an advance timing light and see were the timing is at....Also start looking for any types of vacuum leaks....Like maybe from the MAP sensor seal for an example.

Did this just start out of the blue or has other work been done lately?

I got the boat from a friend that had the boat open to the elements. Found water in the engine, fuel tank, complete fuel system and other accessories. I know the boat and its ran fine 2 years ago. After cleaning the fuel lines vst and new water separator she fired up but idled really high. I checked the throttle cable and let it run. It never settled down. Checking the codes will be very helpful. Do you think more water in the fuel system can cause this?

I have the 1996 7.4 LX (twin engines) and they have the MEFI 1 controllers. The high idle may be a hose or 2 that have come off of the intake plenum. It doesn't take much the make the engine idle high.

With the motor having had water on/in it, things might be stuck. Check that the throttle plates are closing, and the IAC is stuck open.

Does that mean I can rule out the water in the fuel system causing the high idle? I will gladly check all mentioned above but I guess my question is will water make it idle high? I would think it would idle low but I found a passage in the manual that states a high idle could be because of water on the pistons.

Water in the fuel or leak into the intake will not make it idle high, it will cause it to run rough and even have a hard time to idle at all
