454 mag smells hot and loses power

I hav a 1989 villian lll with a 454 mag and bravo one when we took it up the river full throttle I noticed a lil smoke comin off the left side valve cover and a burning smell but boat still hauled *** after about 20 minutes I stopped the boat let it idle for abit then took off again and the boat could hardly pull itself up on plain? We got to the beach Hung out all day then while returning home the boat did the same thing. Any ideas what may be wrong at idle boat dnt smoke or smell funny Jst under high rpms

Ayuh,.... I'd guess it's gettin' Tired, 'n yer beatin' it too hard....

Have ya given it a Tune Up,..??

Fuel filter change, 'n inspection,..??

Is it runnin' Hot, when ya smell somethin' Burnin',..??

At Wot for 20 minutes Solid, yer gonna blow it up in No time....

Well I backed it dwn after I got wide open iv actually only had the boat this summer and Jst putted around a small lake in my town never really got to c how it did on a river. The previous owner had put Chrome valve covers on the engine rite not long b4 I purchased it. And the guages read under 150 for temp and 40 to 50 pds oil pressure not sure maybe I got hosed but Jst thought is c what I could do to help it out thanx

I guess I was wondering also if the valve covers weren't tight would oil seep out and get on manifold and cause the slight smoke. Itsjst on the bottom side of the left valve cover.

Sure valve cover gaskets can definately leak oil out. Be careful tightening them down, use a 1/4" ratchet and tighten by feel, or torque it to spec by the book if you don't have the feel for it.

Easy to snap off the head of those with a 3/8" drive on your first car I mean boat .... and your father has to drill an easy out them. :facepalm: Learned a lot on that car.

But... that would only explain the oil burning smell.

What were you running for RPM's?

Sure valve cover gaskets can definately leak oil out. Be careful tightening them down, use a 1/4" ratchet and tighten by feel, or torque it to spec by the book if you don't have the feel for it.

What were you running for RPM's?

I could get 4400 out of it for awhile then I backed it down to around 3800 then after we ran for awhile I could only get 3600 and it slowly would Jst lose power. So I slowed to an idle let the smoke clear lol then I gav it full throttle once we finally got on plain if I gav it more gas I would hear a high pitch rattle on the left side as if it were in the manifold but than only happened rite as we were back to the marina. I duno it Jst seems the engine loses a lot of power after its been running awhile,at higher fone I mean
