454 making a knock/tap noise

Alright guys, this one has me stumped and I need some input. Carbed Gen Iv 454 with a Bravo 1 outdrive. I ran the boat friday to our river house and anchored out front. Boat ran perfect as usual. I stayed on the boat sunday night because we had a really bad storm come through. All is well. I go to start the boat Monday and it made a really strange thump sound when I hit the key. Nothing really happens and it sounds like the battery is low. I switch batteries and the same thing. I then pull from both batteries and it rolls a couple times and starts up. Now after sitting for a few days I have a knocking sound from the engine. I have tried to diagnose the problem but can not pinpoint the sound even with the stethascope. It doesn't have that deep rod or bearing knock more of a higher pitch(if that makes any sense). The engine will idle but won't take any throttle in gear. Running kinda crappy. I assumed maybe the fuel pump has frozen up and its not getting enough fuel. I pulled it and it seems to be free and moving properly. I pulled the starter to make sure it wasn't dragging the flywheel. I haven't pulled the valve covers yet to make sure it wasn't a broken rocker. Just wanted to see if anybody had any ideas or possible things to look at.

I forgot to mention that I started the engine and pulled each plug wire individualy to see if the knock would stop which would pinpoint a rod bearing but it continued through all the plug wires being removed. Oil pressure is steady at 50psi.

The "thump" makes me think it was hydro-locked and you bent a rod. Compression check would show that. Does not explain the inability to take throttle though. Try removing the belt(s) from the engine and start it up momentarily to see if the noise is being caused by a belt-driven accessory. I recall hearing a circulating water pump that rattled like thrown rod one time.

Excellent post and dead on in my thinking. The reason it would not spin over is one or more cylinders had water in them.

Ayuh,... Ditto what those guys said,....

It hydro-locked in the storm,...

Wonder if the shutters failed, allowin' the water into the motor, hydro-lockin' it, 'n are now laying in the bottom of the y-pipe, not allowin' the exhaust to flow, causing the runnabiliy issue,..??..??

What really Sucks, is yer lookin' at a motor rebuild at a minimum...

That is what i was affraid of. The motor is coming out today and I already have a set of rods to replace what is damaged. I guess I will see what else has been damaged and hope for the best. It had new shutters in the y-pipe so maybe they came loose somehow and fell down in the pipe. It was a hell-of-a storm. What a shame, 35 hours on this motor. I will keep you posted on my finds! Thanks for the help guys!

That could explain the power issue... I'd still try running it without the belt(s) and do a compression check before you remove the engine.
