I have a 1979 searay with twin inboards (not I/Os). I was taking my normal 20 minute trek to the lake that I do every weekend. It is at Idel and I idel at 750 all day long. This time, about ten minutes into the trip, my port engine started fluttering down to 500 rpm and after about 5 minutes, it started stalling out.

At 1500 rpm in or out of gear, she ran fine. In neutral she could run up to 3,000rmpor more with out an issue but under 1,500 would stall. In gear she sputtered after 2,000 rpm.

When I got to the lake, I increased the throttle and once I hit 2,000-2,500 rpm my port engine started fluttering and my wife says clunking. Being at the helm, I could faintly hear the clunking sound but could not replicate at lower rpm when coming in. We actually heard this sound when she started fluttering down to 500rpm.

While in the no wake zone, we tried to start the engine multiple times and we could only keep her running at 1,500rpm. When we got back to port, we had her running out of gear at 2,000 rpm but she would stall if we dropped her below 1,500.

I pulled her flame arrestor to see to see if it was lack of air but same results.

I ran her for about 5 minutes at 1,500-2,500 rpm in neutral while at port whith no stalling but I did notice a slight vibration in the engine.

the oil level and consistency is good. Gear oil is good. Visually, I did not see anything that struck me as concerning.

Thanks in advance

Ayuh,..... Agreed,..... It's runnin' outa gas, 'n it's most likely a Carb problem, so rebuild it,......

'n Merc never used the Olds 455, but it's probably the Chevy 454,.....

also look at the contents of your fuel filters. you may have water and crud in the fuel (which would become crud in the carb)
