The y pipe is leaking I believe ,water comeing in boat when its sitting and not running but increases when running ,so it has to come out .the question I have is would it be easier to unbolt the motor mount bolts and leave the lower mounts in the boat or do as the book says and remove lag bolts that are in boat ,and take mouns out ,I just think that the lag bolts are in good and doint want to disturbe since the height is adjusted with spacers so the bolts woint matter ,any thoughts .?

I've got a Ford 5.0 (302) so not exactly what you have, but when I pulled my engine, I left the mounts bolted to the stringers. I simply took the nuts off the top of the motor mount bolts and picked up on the engine. That's the way my manual called for the job to done. I wouldn't want to loosen those lag bolts either.

My rear mounts are slotted so I made sure when I lifted the engine the front mounts cleared the studs 1st, then the back mounts just slid off when the back of the engine started to lift.

Thanks I'm thinking the Sa,e way

Ayuh,.... I've pulled, 'n planted Alota boat motors,...
Pullin' the lag bolts is the way to Go,....

The block bolts are too hard to get to, 'n don't naturally realign upon install,...
It's just Nuts to pull it by splittin' the mount,...

Pullin' the Lags, leaves the mount intact for blockin' the motor on the floor,...

Pullin' the Lags, allows for Findin' the Rotten wood, in the hull,... If it's there,....

It really doesn't matter if you disturb the height. You'll still need to check/adjust the alignment when you put the drive back on (after installing the engine..........You've removed the drive first, right?) ............It will be a good idea to check for rot in the engine mounting points.

Removed the drive today ,and there was water in the bellows now I'm wondering if the bellows leaked letting water in the boat or the water in the bellows came from inside the bilge ,when the water was a bit high . ,The height or adjustment on the 460 Is with the washers stacked I was was thinking the if I take the lags out they may not go in the same way same way ,hope there is no rot ,your right about using the mounts to to mound motor after removal .the water was leaking slightly from the y pipe area ,and when it was running It seemed to be worse .i have a inspection camera from Harbor freight so I could get in close ,now running it on land it doesn't leak any recommendations thanks

I would remove the Y-pipe and carefully inspect it. You'll need to hope you don't have any holes in it. You might be able to weld or epoxy it if it's corroded but don't leave your boat in the water without a good auto-bilge pump and shore power. If it starts leaking when you're not around and the pump fails, it'll sink the boat.

It's also very possible that you have a leaking transom mount either from a rotten transom or leak someplace in the gimbal mount......but that should leak all the time it's in the water.

A y-pipe for a 460 is very rare. You'll not find them new so a used one is your best bet if yours is corroded beyond repair. Or, you could switch to thru-hull exhaust. I had thru-hull with my 460/Cobra powered FourWinns Liberator (with Capt's-Call) but I almost never ran it "open". EVERYBODY hated it!!

I sold my Y-pipe to a guy that had a severely corroded one that had just about given up looking for a replacement......Mine had been fresh-water only so it was like new!!

I also sold my flywheel housing to another guy that had a coupler failure that destroyed his gimbal mount and flywheel housing. His insurance company was going to "total" the entire boat because they couldn't find a flywheel housing!

I hope your 460 exhaust manifolds are "good"....... I never did find a source for them other than the occasional "new"/old-stock ones on ebay that were a fortune!! Couplers weren't available until Sierra started supplying them. I don't know if they are still available or not.

Good luck...
