Because I am a cheap bastard and love the challenge to create, I built my own alternator conversion kit for my 470. It actually looks pretty good (not to ghetto like others DIY I have seen). I based it off of an ?Ebay? kit and when all said and done I am into it for about $120. If there is enough interest I may post photos and the process of building it in another post. All built with common household tools.
Anyways I went to went to wire it up last night. I ?borrowed? a wiring diagram from one of our ?Ebay? friends and I went to double check it with the threads posted here on IBoats. Needless to say I am now confused. On my boat there are two wires (besides the two that go to the stator) that you disconnect from the voltage regulator. One is a Red wire and the other an Orange wire. The instructions from our ?EBay? friends say to simply connect both the Red and Orange wires to the new wire from the new alternator (however they are not called out as Red and Orange). Per the service manual diagram the red wire goes to the ignition and orange goes to the starter. There is another post on here (however it is for a 1978 470) that show all these wires hooked up to the starter solenoid (Red, Orange, and new alternator wire). So which one installation is correct for my model?
I have attached all the diagrams and photos I could find.
