470 and 140 compatability?

I have a 1977 140/ 1.98R and I might get a 1978 470/ 1.84R outdrive. Are any of the parts on these 2 models interchangable. Or could I just switch out the whole sterndrive, ie, the 470 to replace the 140. The 470 came off a 6 cylinder and mine is off a 4 cylinder GM. Just need to know if it is worth trading for. Thanks for any help.

If you are just talking about the drive itself then almost all parts are interchangeable except the upper gear set where the ratio is set. If it truly was a 470 then it was not a 6 cylinder but a 4 cylinder, just an FYI.

OK, just going by what the guy told me. So, if the 470 stern drive is good, I could just switch it out with the 140? Or I could, say take some lower unit parts from 470 and switch with lower unit on 140? Are the two lower unit housings and say the bearing carrier identical?

What are you trying to accomplish in the end? What is wrong with the 140 drive?

Probably what is meant is, the outdrive for the 470 and V6 has the same gear ratio

The lower end has a 4" crack in the housing that holds the bearing carrier. The bearing carrier itself is bent and has cracks, and the retaining nut is broken too. Everything else is in fine shape in the lower unit. I am picking this 470 up on a trade and was hoping to swap out those parts and maybe a couple others, or just swap out the entire outdrive(if the 470 is not boogered up. That is about the jist of it.

The outdrive from the 470 is going to be harder for the 140 to turn. (it's gonna be a struggle out of the hole, you could do a prop swap to a different pitch to compensate for it. If your upper half is good, you can use the entire lower half from the 470, the lowers halves would be the same. The upper halves have different gear ratios.

I wouldn't attempt to disassemble the drives and swap parts over unless you have the necessary tools and knowledge to do it. There are many on here that can, but it does take a bit of precision with measurements.

the uppers have different gear ratios inside as mentioned

buy it for the lower if the price is right ( like $200 if you expect to have to reseal it etc)
A brand new lower unit with a 3 year nofault warranty is $750, and the whole drive is $1300 so don't spend crazy on used stuff

Thanks for the input. I am getting the whole outdrive for a trade worth about $ 50.00 so this might work out good.
