470 Cooling, Would this work?

Ok, '81 470, 3" exchanger, I've worked over all areas of the cooling system and still verging on over heat if I run WOT for very long. I have my eyes open for a 4" heat exchanger cheap, which is not very likely. But I had the thought, if I find a 3" exchanger why couldn't it be hooked up "in series" running the anti freeze and the lake water through both? Shouldn't be that hard, and I have room to do it. I've only had this thought because the 4" units are so expensive. Am I crazy or would it work?
