I had to pull the engine and outdrive and totally replace the entire inner transom and floor. Along the way I also replaced the camshaft seals and bellows.

Everything is now back in the boat and working except it won't go into reverse. I can hear a grinding noise when trying to shift into reverse. Forward and neutral work fine. I did not replace the shift cable assuming it was OK.

Am I looking at something out of adjustment or did I stretch my shift cable when I had the bell housing out of the boat ?

Re: 470 Merc lost reverse

The unit pulls into rev. so it's probably not a bad cable but needs to be ajusted, there is a slot to adj. the length of throw on the engine lever( where the cables attach, as you move the cables closer togather it will give you more throw at the unit cable it will also move you towards rev. the adjuctment on the cable from the shift box has a adjustment to center the unit into neutral, to much throw and he shift switch will kill he engine. Do not try to adjust the outer shift cable or you will have to reset it's given length---Bob
