Just finishing rebuild and like to know how to start? Wiring harness from gauges to engine plug still in boat. Making a make shift set of gauges from spares. Going to use jumper cables from battery to starter and flywheel ground. Looks like #'s 6 & 7 on harness are the for the key switch. What additional things should I be doing-concerned with before I fire it up. Merc 470 3.7L 224ci 170 hp, serial # B517271, 2brl Merc carb, no power stearing, have altenator kit and 4" heat exchanger. Also the atlernator is a one wire kit. One is a ground and the other seems to run back to the battery? How about fluid-water antifreeze? Engine on a pallet outdrive still on boat. Does the heat exchanger need to be hooked up and filled? Do I need to run a hose-water supply to the engine? Any input would be helpful

Engine on a pallet outdrive still on boat.

You do realize the outdrive MUST be removed before installing the engine so you can get all the hardware under the rear mounts, and check the alignment don't you ???????

Yes, you need antifreeze or even water in the antifreeze side of the engine when running. Water is fine, and cheaper when looking for leaks if you do have one.
You also need water on the raw water side from a garden hose in order to cool the engine.

Fuel hooks to the fuel pump.

As far as gauges go, just use a mechanical oil pressure gauge instead of electrical. No need for a temp gauge or Volt meter. Your hands can tell the temp or an IR temp gun.

Electrically the wire from the alternator MUST be hooked up to the battery. Usually right to the starters main battery terminal.
For ignition, a jumper wire is all you need between the battery + terminal and the + terminal on the coil. Remove to shut it off.
For starting, just jump the slave solenoid.

Re: 470 merc test start

Thanks. This is a spare engine just finished rebulild. Waiting on riser gasket than she'll be all bolted up. Want to run rebuilt engine prior to installing in boat. Don't want to have it installed and need to fix in boat lot easer while out if something needs attention.
What could I use to clean elbow reservior? Was thinking vinger to remove and deposits and rust.
Should I fill the exchanger with water prior to start and just keep filling riser or reservior as needed?
Also just hook up garden hose in line with voltage regulator hose to supply water?
How long should I run untill it gets up to normal operating temp?
Wish I was able to post some pics.
