Hi, I'm new to the forum. Hope I'm posting this in the right section.
I have a 78 Thompson with the 470 merc, It has been in the family since about '81. I have always delt with the slow cranking of the original starter. I had the starter rebuilt about 1 year ago, put new battery cables in also, with not much noticable improvement. New battery this spring, doesnt matter it just cranks slow. So I have been reading the forums about a permanent magnet gear reduction starter, is this the answer to the slow cranking? What is the best pmgr starter to use and where can I get one? I have checked ebay, but I have no idea of the quality of some of these and some of the sellers have some bad feedback about starters not lasting, wrong starter, or receiving a starter that isnt even a pmgr starter.
Thanks for your help
