Hi, I'm new to the forum. Hope I'm posting this in the right section.
I have a 78 Thompson with the 470 merc, It has been in the family since about '81. I have always delt with the slow cranking of the original starter. I had the starter rebuilt about 1 year ago, put new battery cables in also, with not much noticable improvement. New battery this spring, doesnt matter it just cranks slow. So I have been reading the forums about a permanent magnet gear reduction starter, is this the answer to the slow cranking? What is the best pmgr starter to use and where can I get one? I have checked ebay, but I have no idea of the quality of some of these and some of the sellers have some bad feedback about starters not lasting, wrong starter, or receiving a starter that isnt even a pmgr starter.
Thanks for your help

That is the answer! Pretty sure they are all made in China, so one is probably as good as another. Put one in my 470 about 5 years ago, so far so good. WAY easier to install! E bay is pretty good, if you use Paypal your purchase is guaranteed to be as described.
