OK Guys I need some Ideas. Here is my story. Last summer I broke a ring in my 1983 140 hp Mercurser Last Fall I pulled motor and had a sleeve installed put it all back together with new termostate and raw water pump in foot. Ran it on muffs to set timing and check for leaks every thing looked and worked fine. Due to high water in march thrugh May boat sat on trailor wating for water to resede. Finally put it in the water last weekend and made one round with a skier (Me) When i was swimming back to the boat it blew a hose off. Steam went every where. Temp was pegged at 240. Drug it back to the bank let it cool pulled the thermostat out filled it back up with water after replacing hose cranked and ran fine for 3minutes and temp went back to 240 pulled it out of the water hooked up the muffs water is circulating through heat exchanger so I know there is no restriction then pulled the water circulating pump cover nothing broken there. put it all back together ran again on muffs and it still runs hot just takes longer for it to get there. I check all hose for kinks and put laser thermometer on heat exchange hosees 220 on the exchanger in and 190 out.any ideas would be greatly appreciated. also checked plugs and compression and for water in cyl. or faulty temp quage . Maybe head gasket no problem there. tired of scrathing my head.

Have you checked the exhaust riser to see if it's plugged? If you can't pass the raw water thru the heat exchanger to cool it, it will overheat.

Don I dont want to sound dum but my book does not show an exhaust riser is that the elbow on the back of the exhaust manifold. I am getting water from the stern drive with muffs because i pulled the hose off to my heat exchanger while running i guess its enough did not run but a second just to look for extermal water.

is that the elbow on the back of the exhaust manifold

Yes

If the water passages are plugged up in the elbow, the water will not flow thru the heat exchanger and out the back of the boat. It may be partially plugged and only allowing a little bit of water thru. But you need full flow to cool the engine.

you know i do remember taking that off and cleaning and repainting but Im thinking I may have used the wrong Gasket Seems like there about 6 or 8 gaskets that came in the overhaul kit that would fit that part and the old one tore in pieces taking it off weeks later on the rebuild I may have piked the wrong one and closed off some water passage Ill go take a look and let you know later.

My Resevoir Tank And Heat Riser Is A One Piece Unit. All The Ones I See In Book Shows Tank And Heat Riser Seperated, Tank In Front And Riser On Rear Of Exhaust Manifold.i Pulled It Off And The Gasket I Used Only Had One Slot In The Front With The Two Side Slots Blocked Off. As A Quick Check I Drilled Three Small Hole In The Plate Gasket On The Sides And Put It Back Together Now Water Runs From Tanks Out The Foot When I Tried To Fill Tank. All The Gaskets That I Can See Pictures Of In My Parts Book Have Three Slots Or Two Slots And Two Holes On Sides.can Anyone Give Me A Part Number For 1983 470 Exhaust Manifold To Heat Riser Gasket Serial Number 6304846. Any Help Here Would Be Greatly Appreciated.
