I have a seized 470 with Alpha I (Chaparral 187XL - 19'), the engine won't turn and it was having water in oil. I think the engine is pretty much shot. So I am thinking to rebuild it or replace it with a 4.3 V6. Is it possible to replace it with 4.3 V6? If so, what is the pros/cons of doing so? I saw someone mentioned the weight gain because of the iron block, but not sure it matters that much.

Re: 470 Replacement

All you will need is a complete V6 with Merc exhaust system, coupler, and flywheel housing, new exhaust Y for the V engines, new inner transom shield for the motor mounts, the drive gear ratio MIGHT work, but you will probably have to change props.
Then you may have to manufacture stringers and mount pads because the V6 has motor mounts on the sides of the engine while the 470 has a front mount.
Other than that, it's a bolt in.

'Course,.. It's Never a Bolt in.....

You'll need a Complete Boattail Engine, with ALL the accessories......

You Might get around the inner transom plate,+ Y pipe by plumbing the Exhaust Right Out the Transom.........
You'll need to measure the distance between the rear motor mounts,... You'll need 9"s......

The Gear Ratio Will Work,.... But you'll No Doubt be needing a New Prop..........

And,... You'll need to build an Engine Bed in the Hull.......

The 4.3l is the Easiest Swap for the 3.7l there Is..........

You could build a 300 cu.in. inline 6. say .030 oversize, mild cam, good flowing head work. should get almost 230 hp out of it. would need to rebuild a new front motor mount cause its a bit longer than a 470.

This post bring up an Unusual Question that I Don't know the answer to.............

What Pattern IS the Bellhousing Flange on a 470..???......
The motor is a Merc. Block, with a Ford Head.....

Did Merc. use the Ford small block pattern,..????....

Asside from That Question,......
I Doubt you'd find Manifolds for a 300cid Inline 6 cylinder........
