Would anyone know the number of teeth on a Mercruiser 470 (170, 180 hp) ring gear? This is the flywheel component that the starter engages.

I think it's a standard GM part, I'm gonna run down to the auto parts store and grab one once I know the teeth count.

If anyone knows, thanks, I really don't want to count them!:D:D

Re: 470 Ring Gear Replacement

I did a ford one, easy with MAPP (yellow) Gas ( Good gloves and big hammer helps too.. ( sorry dont know the number,)

and the 470 isn't a GM, it's a Mercruiser ONLY Block, and the head is supposedly from a Ford 460 Big Block.

good luck.

I thought GM built it for Mercruiser, using Ford components.:confused:

In case you can't get a new ring, check Rochester craigslist "mercruiser 470 parts", there is a flywheel for sale. Good luck.
P.S. Let us know if you do find a ring.

Rochester Clutch and Brake has ring gears, I'm going to pull the old one off and go match it up. Thanks Stonyloam, I should upgrade to that 4" Heat Exchanger for sale on Craigslist!

No Mercury built it themselves, and they use a Ford flywheel, so matching up a ring gear at the auto parts store is no prob.

Nice to know thanks zb! The 4" exchanger is an excellent idea:).

Re: 470 Ring Gear Replacement

Thought I would provide you guys an update. Pulled the motor (redneck style, with an existing pole, landscape timbers, and a chain hoist).

The ring gear was chewed up on one side, hence all the starting problems I have been having. The starter gear was chewed up too, replacing that with another 9 tooth.

Took the flywheel off, popped off the ring gear and flipped it over. Good as new! The starting problem was due to the chewed up teeth on the flywheel gear and the starter gear mating together and sitting on top, not fitting into the grooves.

Starter's going back in today. Anyone want an 81 Ray??? I can't afford this!
