470 rough running

Hey guys, finally got my boat out on the water yesterday after having to fix the notorious 470 coolant leak in the engine, rebuild the outdrive, gimbal bearing, etc. Anyway, it ran fine/smooth in neutral idling, but when I put it into gear it ran rough and stalled a few times (was embarrassing trying to dock at after launch with this stalling ). When I gave it throttle it was fine but I noticed flat spots at 2000 RPMS and again at 4000 RPMS. Would this be a carb problem? The carb has been rebuilt a few months ago along with a tune up and timing. I tried to adjust the mixture screws with no luck; any suggestions?? BTW, it is a '78 470 with 470 outdrive, with a new 4 blade 14.5X18 Diamond4 on it; was going nice WOT at 5000 RPMS. Thanks!

Re: 470 rough running

The first thing I would do with rough running 470 is a compression check, just to make sure all is well with the head gasket. Peace of mind.:D

It does sound like the carb. The idle circuit and poss the accelerator pump or passage.
I have found with mine that 10 deg base timing works best, the factory 8 just doesnt work that well.
Are the dist weights good and free?

Re: 470 rough running

I think there are probably 3 fuel filters on my 470.
1. fuel water separator
2. filter in the bell shaped part near the pump.
3. filter at the carburater where the fuel line enters the carb.

Try replacing those before a tear down of the carb.

everything is on the table, until you eliminate it.

You have some good suggestions above...
