470 running without water?

I'm going to puy the boat to bed tomorrow and I am goinging to remove the outdrive for the winter. It's a 470 with a alpha one drive. If I remove the outdrive can I run the motor long enough, without water, to fog the motor? Once fogged then I'll take care of the raw water side. Thanks I'm new at this being a first time boat owner. Thanks again.

Ayuh,... If ya wanta risk burnin' up the rubber parts in the exhaust,... sure...

Seems like altering the sequence would be easier though...

Do I understand that you have a closed cooling system? Should be no problem.
Just keep an eye on temperature gauge.

I've run completely drained V8 car engines for 5-6 minutes, they were fine after.

Edit. oops, forgot about the exhaust flappers, like Bond-o mentioned.

Thanks for the quick answers. Guess I'll run her on muffs, fog , then take the drive off. It's a brand new drive so I'll keep it in a heated shop for the winter. Come spring I'm going to replace the bellows and check everything else out. Thanks again.

Sounds great! With your 470 you only have to remove the aft plug to drain the heat exchanger seawater side, and make sure the power steering cooler drains, but you probably knew that LOL. While you have the outdrive off it is a good time to retorque the gimbal ring clamping screws (the two bolts on top of the ring) to 55 ft. lb. to keep everything nice and tight. Good luck.

Another way is with the drive removed ,a water feed hose from a washing machine cut in half and inserted into the inlet hole.
