470 shifting issues

I had my lower stern drive out to replace the raw water pump components and troubleshoot shifting issues. With the lower drive out, the shift coupling from the upper drive moves free and easy to all three forward, neutral, and reverse positions. After reinstalling the lower drive with the shift pin tight (forward gear) right per my Clymers, everything still shifts fine with the motor turned off, and the cable is free and easy into all three positions. Took me a while to get the drive shaft aligned to get the lower drive up, but for the first time pulling it, I did pretty well. But, when I fire the motor up, let it warm up, then try to shift, the prop doesn't move in forward or reverse. With the drive out and the shift pin set to forward gear, the prop stops when turning counter-clockwise, so I think the splines are fine. Plus, looking at other discussion threads, I apparently joined the club of stalling when shifting into reverse. I don't know if this is a micro-switch issue, cabling issue, or combination, but with the cable so free and easy, I'm not sure. It's time to get on the water, so any advice would help! Thanks!
