I have a Merc 470 and water found a way in to the starter motor over the winter. I think it dripped in from the hinges of the doghouse. I went online to Mercruiser but the one they show for the motor(going by the serial number) is different than the one installed in the boat. The one they show has no selenoid attached to it and the one I have does. I did find one that looks right and says it fits in 470's among others but I need to Know if mine turns CW or CCW. Does anybody know for a single engine boat which way the starter would turn? Also is there a automotive starter that fits these boats or do they just not last? Thanks

Re: 470 Starter

First: Do not use an automotive part.

By taking the old starter to an auto electrician, you can most likely have it renovated for much less.

Remember to tell it's for marine use - it has to be insulated for the use (which is one of the reasons not to use automotive parts).
