470 water and Oil mixing

I finally gave up on my 85 470. It just did not want to start. So being the sucker that I am I bought a 1978 boat on eBay this weekend knowing it had an engine problem. The boat is in excellent condition, only reason I bought it. The boat has ALWAYS been used in fresh water as the seller was the original owner's son. I have not tried anything as of yet because I wanted to pick some brains here first. Hopefully one of the gurus like Don S. will give me some helpful advice :D . I checked the coolant tank(cast mounted to manifold and it's empty. I tried putting a little water in in but it gurgled all the way to the oil pan. Any Ideas? I know where to check on cars but boats are completely differnet in this particular area. Also how interchangible are the parts between the 1978 and the 1985...JUST IN CASE?

Thanks in advance.

I Can't give you any pointers,.... I Avoid 470s Almost as Bad as the Lovely OMC Stringer Drives............

I Just Can't Believe, that after owning 1 Dead 470,.... You Bought Another 1, that you Know is Dead...........

You Must be a Sado-Masochist...............

Sell the parts of Both of them,+ Drop in a SBC,... Or Something.......

Well the one that's dead is due to an idiot that did not know what he was doing when he rebuilt it. Reason #4,326 that you don't carry a boat engine to a automotive repair shop. The biggest reason I bought this boat was because it is in such good condition, being sold by the original owner, and it was less than $1000. This motor does have the water/oil mixing problem but it's still got 120lbs of compression on all 4 cylinders and it's still original....call me a dumb a$$ but I'm hoping for a simple fix...although I know it's a long shot.

Well,.... I'd think your next step is to get Both engines on stands,+ Torn-Down........
then you'll know What you have to work with.......
I tried putting a little water in in but it gurgled all the way to the oil pan.
That Shouldn't be Too Hard to Find...........

Good grief, another 470. What you probably have is the second (internal) water pump seal shot. One of the devils of the 470 was that the closed system coolant pump is internal, running off the camshaft (lousy design). There are two seals: the external or foward seal prevents coolant from leaking into the bilge. The inside or aft seal prevent coolant from entering the engine proper (read: coolant flowing into oil sump). You've got to pull the front of the engine (behind the magneto) to get to these seals. Slso, someone may have already replaced the mag with an alternator, so the pump housing is now directly in front of the engine (unless the someone left on the mag wheel and its weights)..

Actually Bondo I love a good challenge. Everyone I've talked that has has personal experience with the 470's say they are good engines with 4" heat exchanger and an external alternator. As I stated my deceased father bought the 1985 boat for us to work on together. Once he died I had no interest in it but tried to get it running to sell it. The engine and outdrive had been completely rebuilt but it had never been cranked. When I saw the boat I purchase on ebay for less than $1000 with the same engine it made sense to buy it. The boat itself is almost perfect, never been in salt water and was a one owner that was meticulous. Thanks for your replies. I'm pulling both engines as Bondo recommended  (actually found head gasket blown) so I'm taking 2 to make 1 good one. I was told that the head gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets were all the same as an automotive 460. My brother-in-law a head gasket from his racecar that he said I could have. Will this work?

Not 1s that just Happen to Fit........

The 460 Ford is an All Iron motor........
Even though the 470 was born with parts that originally were 460 Ford,... That's where it Ends....
The 470 is an Iron head,+ Aluminum Block.........
Your bil's parts Might Fit,... But are they Right ?????

Don't Cheap Out Now............. ;)

Best of Luck with Your Chosen Adventure.......

Re: 470 water and Oil mixing

Money isn't the problem. The wife wants it fixed yesterday and i figured if they were the same what the heck. After I posted I went to the Napa store and the gasket listed in their marine parts book is the same part number as a 460 gasket. I may just order a complete engine overhaul set so I will have everything that I MIGHT need. Thanks Bondo.
