anyone have a part number for a sending unit for my water temp gauge. Its an 86 470 & it has the original water temp gauge. I figured the ohms are prob somewhat standard. If anyone has a vehicle make and model that works so I can get one from autozone that would be much appreciated.

Here is a link for water temp senders

http://www.psepmarineparts.biz/store/mercruiser_water_temperature_senders.htm

I have not been working on these engines for very long, only a couple months now on my own 470's. But one thing i have learned is, for merc marine engines, dont hold your breath looking in auto stores for replacement parts, small or large...

Here is a good thread about these units and guages

I had to replace sender, gauge checked out ok on my '78 470
I bought parts online, much easier then driving around and not finding what u need.

Sierra Temp Sender Ts26621
http://www.jmsonline.net/sierra-temp-sender-ts26621.htm

look for matching/similar gauges on iboats
http://www.iboats.com/Marine-Engine...5955813--**********.774804829--view_id.217132

and get the right manual for your engine, it has all the procedures to test gauges and part numbers for sender, etc.

I bought one about a month ago, haven't had a chance to put it on the motor yet, but I'm sure it's the right size. I can't remember where I got it, but I think it was from ebasicpower, part number medb-936-2.

If you want to check that part number yourself, click here to go to their catalog, and right there on the left they are nice enough to have the 3.7 engines in their own little categories, so click on 3.7 Cooling System, then Sender, and that is the part that shows up. I also have it as Sierra number 18-5897. Same part. Around $14... iBoats doesn't have it.

I punched in the numbers off the old sender and its a datcon 02079-02. according to their website its a stewart warner gauge spec. I cant find ohm specs anywhere. Who was manufacturing most of the gauges back in the mid 80s for boats?

looks like ts26621 sierra sender might work.

my gauge read about 140-150 only after running WOT for a little bit. thermostat seemed to be working ok when i pulled it. bought a new one anyways.
