470 won't start

ran boat the other night started to act up after about 1 1/2 hr. thought it was the coil because i had simmilar problems before. bought and installed new coil still no start. checked no fuel after looking the fuel line rubbed against the alternator and wore a hole in it. fixed that and know it will only pop off for a few seconds. filled carb full of sea foam same results. any sugggestions.

oh ya the motor is a 3.7 mercruiser with a merc 2 barrel

With the key in the on position. Check that you have 9.5 volts at the + side of the coil. Just for a quick check run a wire from the + side of the battery to the + side of the coil and try to crank her up. Note you will have to disconnect this wire to stop it from running if she starts.
