My 48 johnson starts to surge after running for a few minutes. I have disassembled and cleaned the the carbs, checked the fuel pump screen, replaced the fuel hose connectors. It will try to run right if I keep pushing on the key (prime pump). Sometimes it will start to run right after running at half throttle. Att the hose connections are tight. What ar the symtoms of a bad fuel pump?

What year is your engine? Usually if you have to use the primer to keep it running it is a sign of lack of fuel in the idle circut. When you overhauled you carb did you remove the core plug on top of the carb and clean the passages in there?

95 model. No I didn't remove the core plug. I guess if replacing the fuel pump don't do the trick I will get back into the carbs.

Did you check the pump operation, why throw parts at it and hpoe it helps?

EDIT: I just read your double post. If squeezing the primer bulb makes it run properly you most likely need a pump.
