I am starting a rebuild on a 48' steel hull sternwheel. Basically I was wondering if I should ask questions and document the rebuild in this forum or go to one that specializes more in steel hulls and house boats. I would prefer to stay in this forum because I feel I have gotten to know many of you just from reading your posts over the years but I am not sure if there is experience here on steel hulls and house boat designs. Please don't take this as an insult that I contemplated using another forum I am just looking for the best place to discus this style boat.
Let me know what you think.

That wouldn't happen to be at Rayland Marina along the Ohio would it? Interesting, huge undertaking. Resto on the water or do you have a dry dock the size of a plane hanger somewhere? :)

Best of luck, I may not be of much use other then as a wheel chock for your steel paddlewheel project, but tagging along just the same............

Yes it is in Rayland. Majority of the rebuild will be on water. I have a trailer that will allow us to pull it out and work on the Hull. For the most part the hull is in good shape. I would like to sandblast it and get a fresh coat of paint on though.

I've been there a few times & thought I recognized it. Nice group of folks living on-site, or at least all that I've meet have been.

Best of luck on the resto.

Well I hope to pull it out of the water in 2 weeks and start the work. I am still looking for more insight on posting the project here. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Start here since you seem comfortable with the people and advice given on this site. If it so happens you come across a problem that cant be solved by this group of experts, just copy and paste you story from here onto another site and see if it finds you the answers you need.

Re: 48' steel hull sternwheel

All projects are welcome, most in the resto are fiberglass hulls, a few are tin. Recently someone posted another steel hull (it's steel right?)

Best of my knowledge, yours is the only paddlewheel.

I'll tag along, but am unlikely to have substantive help to offer.....

Until you get her outta the water & start the tear down, it may be hard to judge the amount of help you'll get, since you don't have any really questions posed yet.

As BG suggested, get underway & see what comes. You might need to run threads here & elsewhere to get all the help you'll need. The advantage of iboats, in my opinion, is the extremely active & frequent posters & boat nerds that watch for projects to start that interests them or piques their interest.

There is someone building his own steam engine here currently, but his is a long term project, on year 3 I think...

Please consider posting milestones as you reach them here, if you keep an active thread elsewhere. Or at a minimum link that thread, at some point someone may come across this thread & have info that might help you or have questions about their own project.

Best of luck, however you proceed.

Has a Detroit 453 connected to an automatic transmission then to a differential. Chain drive from there ending up at the wheel Not sure about the draw yet but will know soon.
I just got the generator running today after sending the magneto out to get repaired. The gen is a 1950's 4cyl Hercules. Its an old heavy generator that I plan to only use for the restoration then install a smaller lighter one. This one will probably end up at my house for when we have power outages.
I will start a new thread here when the restro starts.
Thanks

And I'll subscribe, because, frankly, this is just too cool not to watch. Like the other guy a while back with a 50' yacht. Where else are you gonna find this kind of entertainment? :)

Re: 48' steel hull sternwheel

First off, boat nerd...yep, guilty...
Second, way too cool a project not to share it with us...Please, Please, Please...
Third, as far as getting all the info you would need to bring it fully back to life...
I don't know if the knowledge base available here would be enough for everything you need to do, but there is something like a million years of experience around here with everything from A-Z...
I have seen posts by guys who are engineers, craftsmen, fabricators, health specialists, businessmen and yes, even lawyers...:laugh:, etc...If it exists, there is probably someone here who does or has done it...

So, definitely count me in to see what develops... I'll be eagerly awaiting to read any updates...

Best of Luck and Have Fun!
