This motor is new to me but the original owner said it needed a carb cleaning once per year and ran allright.

The switch and battery wire went bad soon after I got it. I ran a jumper wire to the new switch battery terminal.

After cleaning the carb twice it started and idled for 10 seconds and quit with the throttle in neutral.

After that it would crank a few seconds a quit. If the plugs are out it cranks normally. The carbs have flat tops with gaskets if that means anything.

The model number is: 1996 J48ESLEDC
04071701
What is happening here? Thanks.

To me it sounds like low voltage caused by corrosion on electrical connections, a bad battery, lack of lubrication in the cylinders....... Could be any number of things. When you say "cranking", you do mean the starter turning over the engine, right?
Are you certain the battery is o.k.?

I noticed the battery connection wasn't real tight and the posts could use a cleaning. The car battery made it turn over normally. I cleaned all the wire connections too. The low voltage you mentioned solved the problem. Thanks.
