Well I've been having some starting/running issues with my 1992 Evinrude 48HP and I finally got them fixed. Simple thing like starter rebuild, fuel line replacement and plug change. While I was doing the maintenace I figured I might as well change the lower unit oil while I was at it. The guy at the local marina told me to use the Evinrude Johnson Ultra-HPF gearcase lube which I bought from him along with a pump. I just bought this boat so i haven't changed to LU oil yet. When I drained the oil it was disgusting to say the least plus there wasn't a whole lot of it in there. There was a little fuzz on the magnet but not enough to worry me. So I refilled the LU ( from the bottom plug hole till it came out the top) and figured I would check it again after a couple times out. Well I got out today for the first time since I changed the oil and after about 1 minute of running at 1/2 speed or so.. the lower unit just crapped out. The prop spins a little bit but the lower unit makes alot of noise doing it. The engine runs fine.. probably better than before. So I got home and drained the oil.. this time there was alot of metal shaving on the plug and some of them where pretty big plus the new oil was already pretty nasty looking. I pulled the lower and it defaintly seems like there is some grinding going on in there.

Is it time for a new lower unit? Are these hard to find used for this engine?

Any chance I can rebuild it?

any help would be appreciated?
