48sp bogs down

I have a 1988 48Special and I hit something Saturday night and now it won't go full throttle, its like it is starving for fuel. If I press in the choke , it increases rpm and tries to run normal for a few seconds. It starts fine and runs fine except at the last 25 percent of the throttle. Any Ideas of what might be the problem?

Re: 48sp bogs down

Your motor actually has a primer rather than a choke. The primer squirts small amounts of fuel directly into the throats of the carbs when you activate the "choke" switch. Since you say it only seems to go when choked (primed) it seems that your motor is not getting the fuel required for top speed. I'm guessing that somehow some object in your fuel system became dislodged due to the impact when you hit something. This "something" is now restricting fuel flow to one or both carbs. I would check the fuel (VRO) pump output first. If this checks OK then a good carb cleaning/rebuild should solve your problem. Also while your at it inspect all associated fuel and vaccum hoses for problems.

I hope this helps.

McG,

I'm not sure how to check the output of the VRO. Do you have any instructions on how to check it.
I will definately check the fuel lines and vacuum hoses. Then I will then proceed to clean the carbs.

Thanks,
Oscar
