I have a 20' center console with a yamaha 115 outboard 4cyclinder with the precision blend 50:1 system. The original owner of the boat used to put 4cycle 30weight heavy duty oil in the tank. He told me to do the same but after looking through the yamaha manual and checking different products out im not sure if i should. The manual says to use 2cycle tcw-3. Will the 4cycle oil hurt the motor or system and if so is it possible to flush the whole system out and how hard would that be. Im trying to get the boat ready for the lake so im doing my best to do some maintenance. What i am looking to do maintenance wise is the following:
Change fuel water seperator filter.
Grease hydraulic steering and power trim and tilt
Grease the Prop
Change lubrication in the lower unit
Make sure the carbs are clean: not sure how to do this yet
Make sure all latches on the cowling hood are greased
Grease wheel bearing hubs on trailer
Flush out oil and change if i have to.
Am I missing anything

Thanks for any help.

Always use the TCW-3 Outboard motor oil in your 2 stroke motor, Yamalube or one of the others is fine. My guess is that his use of 4 cycle oil may have left some carbon in your motor, like on the piston rings, exhaust ports, others. Better start using the approved 2 stroke oil and get some Yamaha Ringfree and run it in your motor at the "deposit removal" dosage for a few tanks to clean out any carbon. Apparently the motor is still running, so it's not been ruined. Use the Ringfree and the Stabil Marine all the time from now on.

I should somehow drain all the oil in the reservoir and extra holding tank before running the motor again? From my understanding you shouldnt mix different types of oils. Do you know any good places to pickup the Stabil Marine or Yamaha Ring free. Appreciate your help.

I woul drain, purge, flush as much of the old oil out of the system as possible and fill the tank with the TC-W3 oil, run the motor on the new oil to "get it in the system", should be no problem. You can get the Yamaha Ringfree online or from the dealer...not cheap, but at dosage levels, very much worth the price, buy Stabil Marine at Walmart for $20/quart. Regarding oils, I use the Pennzoil Marine 100% Synthetic from Walmart($27/gallon), not cheap, but good, clean burning oil. You can order a Yamaha Outboard Motor manual online also to study and learn your motor. Good Luck!
