Was running today, cruising along and it just died and sat there and dieseled a bit. Wouldnt restart. '84 bayliner. Any idea's what would cause it? I pulled a plug and had no spark. Pulled the rotor cap and screwed around, scraped the points with my knife, put it back together and it did fire up. But not convinced that was it.

In the past you would be cruising along and it was do a miss like you turned the key off and on super fast, but never like this. Hoping someone else has had this happen or has some info.

Thank you.

I'd be looking for a loose connection on the "I" wire at the key switch, & a 'jiggle' test on the rest of it too....;)

I did put new ends on the wires at the key, as the boat has been doing this since I got it. I ran a jumper to the coil when it was dead and still no spark last night in the water..

I have had to replace my coil twice on my 4cyl Volvo. Same type symptoms at first then no spark at all. I changed to a external resistor coil set up and no problems since.

Re: 4cyl volvo just dies

well i have been working on a friends volvo 4 cyl for over a month taking it out and retrying everytime first i checked the fuel and carb but found nothing significant so i went to ignition and replaced points with electronic conversion, plug wires , plugs , and coil. tryed it again and same thing after about 20 to 25 minutes of running perfect it would begin to bog then pull it back and it would die. so i replaced fuel pump with a new one , tryed again and again the same thing. this time we pulled top off carb when it died and the bowl was empty. 20 min later we restarted and it was idling fine so we shut off and pulled top off carb and float was full. not happy with results i installed a marine electric fuel pump and tryed it again. this time it ran for quite a while and while making some hard test turns it began acting up. i think maybe wiring from ignition switch so i hot wired it from batt to coil and started but it still would die after a while. so now i am beginning to wonder if the pickup tube in the tank has a spot somewherethats causing loss of siphon at times and causing the bowl of the carb to empty . looking into this and will keep you posted.
