Re: 4hp Deluxe model
Seriously consider buying it! I have a 1991 Evinrude 4 hp Deluxe (short shaft), the Johnson is the same. The 2 cylinder 4 hp is a real fishing motor, you can rope start it in gear if you want because it starts so easy and you don't even have to turn it off. I put mine on my 14 ft aluminum boat when it's very cold out, too cold for river running (early spring and late fall, and it snowed here yesterday). I use it mostly for trolling or back trolling (where reverse gear is used a lot) and holding in the river current and it will almost put the boat on plane at W.O.T.

Just went to my file cabinet and I now have the 1988 Johnson Outboards catalog in front of me! That cabinet is full of this stuff. Picked it up at a boat show. Motor looks the same, but on mine they moved the lanyard cutoff switch to behind the twist grip throttle on the tiller handle. On the 1988 it's on the end of the tiller handle.

Lot's of bragging in the '88 catalog, but it says the power head includes bearing surfaces coated with pure alloy silver, and just not any silver but purer than the silver used in fine jewelry for long wear. Full rated horsepower at the prop shaft and super quiet sound isolation. UniForge one-piece crankshaft, MagFlash CD ignition, Pre-Set idle adjustment and spiral bevel gears. The 4 Deluxe, 6 and 8 all have new ball-clutch-shift mechanism that's noticeably easier to move though the F-N-R positions and more rugged, too. It goes on to say - Our new 4 Deluxe has been given increased power and speed and you can add AccuMix oil injection as an accessory.

I like the shallow water drive feature.

Looked this up for reference in that file cabinet too - For my 1991 I paid $788.73 new.

Never had a problem with it and just do normal maintenance to it.
