4K RPM's NO POWER

I have a 70 hp johnson 94, at WOT I get 4k rpm's at about 34 mph only and when I push the choke on the switch in it jumps up to 5k rpm's and 38 mph. I tried to squeeze the bulb while traveling at 4k rpm's and nothing happens. I have good compression (123 on all) and the fuel is fresh, plugs and coils are working correctly. What does this mean?

Re: 4K RPM's NO POWER

When was the last time you rebuilt your carbs? Have you checked the fuel filter screen and all of the fuel ines for tight connections? Sounds like you may be running a little lean and when you choke it, actually priming it, you are giving it more fuel and bringing up the rpm's. I would check all fuel lines and filter and then rebuild the carbs. Probably shouldn't run it like that beacuse if it is a lean condition you will end up burning up a piston. Good luck.

Yep, I'd bet you are running lean. Get the carbs done before you burn up your engine.

Thanks for the info, I'm gonna rebuild them my self. Can I spray carb cleaner into the high speed orifice to try and clean it out or should I just rebuild them since it has never been done and it's a 94? Is there anything I can do to the carbs to get more power?

Leave the carb cleaner on the bench until you've completely disassembled the carbs. Simply spraying them down the carb throats won't do much. If you were to spray it into the carb itself, it might loosen up more gunk, leading to more problems.

Get a manual, tear them down, replace what needs replacing, and get back on the water!
- Scott
