Ok guys, I am going to try to give some history here instead of these small posts looking for a quick solution. Please read this and think about what my problem could be. I did confirm the dipstick is OEM.

Upon arrival to buy the boat, I checked the oil via the dipstick and it was perfect. Ran the boat hard before buying and oil pressure was just fine.

The very next day, I head to the lake and check the oil after launch and warm up. The dipstick has no oil on it whatsoever. I add 2 quarts, run it for an hour or two, oil pressue just fine so I don't worry that much about it.

I get home to find that the oil is overfilled by about the amount I added. I decided to just change the oil to make sure all is ok prior to the next weekend. Drained via the dipstick pump and got out at lease 5 quarts. I add 5.5 quarts and a new filter, run the engine and oil dipstick indicates just the right amount of oil in the engine.

So, again this weekend, I check the oil in the driveway and all is a-ok. Ran it for 30 minutes on the muffs to monitor oil and temp. I jet to the lake and after a full day of tubing, etc, I run out of gas. Although I was VERY certain it was out of fuel, I opened the hatch to check the oil. The dipstick is dry, no oil at all. I freak out, thanking our good Lord that I ran out of as when I did as it appeared I was out of oil. (I did wait 5 minutes to ensure all oil was back on the pan. I add 2.5 quarts of oil and trailer it. (once I got fuel anyway). I get home, check the oil and I am over capacity by the same amount i added.

So today I decide to level the engine perfectly in the driveway. I used a level and verified its accuracy. Well, I change the oil again in the driveway. Pulled the little drain hose from the oil pan out of the bildge drain and open it up. It trickles out maybe 2/3 or a quart of oil. I am thinking "UH OH....where is all my oil? I guess I do have a big leak afterall." I decide, to be sure, to jack up the nose just a tad and ..............out comes the balance of the oil, including the extra I added!

Should I just ignore this issue and realy on oil pressure and the alarm while on the water....just be sure my levels look right on the trailer? Hard for me to do that as everything I read says I should get an accurate reading on the dipstick while on the water.

I am stumped and frustutated to the MAX. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Maybe I am over thinking this.

Re: 5.0 Alpha 1, Gen 2, Oil capacity issue - Please help

when you check the oil immediately after running the engine, it makes sense that the level is low/not appearing on the dipstick

the oil that normally would be present on the dipstick in a cold engine is in the upper half of the engine when it is warm and just been running

it takes a few minutes for the two quarts of oil to make its way through all the oil passages back into the pan

as long as you have no oil present in the bilge, your oil level is fine and not leaking out of the motor

one way to be sure is to run the engine up to temp, shut it off, wait ten minutes, then check the oil level

Are you serious???

Heres how to fix your problem. Throw a ton of oil in the motor. Run the snot out of it. Do 1 last hard run with your bow trimmed all the way up and when you get close to the nearest Coast guard boat, Envirourmental police boat, or even a game warden, flip your bilge pump so he can see all the oil your dumping into the water.
Those guys will be more than happy to turn your motor off for you and bring your boat back to the dock.... problem solved.

If your loosing that much oil your bilge must be a mess by now. Fix your leak or get the 'ell off the water. I wouldn't want ANYBODY boating in my waterways with a leak like that. And now that you know about it, its even more irresponsible.

I am going to edit my response but I can tell you that I am NOT leaking oil. Maybe 1/3 cup in the bilge. If you would have read my post, you would see that I keep overfilling my oil due to getting an incorect reading on the dipstick.

Sounds like you're not loosing oil but because you boat is heavy by the stern your motor is not sitting level. So when you check it, the oil is away from the dip stick. Figure like check your cars engine oil sitting on a hill vs on level ground.
Just a WAG.
Hope it's right.
