I noticed that when I turn the key my fuel pump primes and never stops. I swear it used to only prime for about 5 seconds but now it seems to keep whirring away. I fired the boat up and ran her at the dock for a good while.

Engine off but key in on position the pump keeps going.. Key off no problem. Boat runs great otherwise but I don't want to fudge around.

Replaced relay but same issue. Fuses are ok. I swear it only ran for a few seconds before but maybe I am remembering wrong.

2001 Volvo Penta 5.0 GL carbed.

One person said that as long as the key if off and only let it run when the engine is going its not a big deal. I am not cool with that lol. I don't want to have the engine off and key accidentally on and have the pump spinning away when snorkeling

The GL gets power to the pump thru the starter solenoid circuit when cracking and alternator when running. Should never "prime" or run otherwise if wiring is factory,

Thanks. I am stumped though because I was sure it used to prime but its carbed.

Basically I should not hear it at all unless its trying to turn over while cranking?

That is correct.

It is possible that your alternator output has failed. With the engine off check the voltage at the L2 terminal of the alternator. Should have a green wire going to it. You haven't done any alternator work lately have you?

Your are sure it is the fuel pump you hear, not something other item like a vent fan or bilge pump that has been wired to run when ignition is turned to run?

Its definitely the fuel pump.

I have not done any work to the alternator. I did have the hatch open and it got rained on for about 20 seconds before this happened. PErhaps the rain killed the alt? Will test the alternator this week, Thanks for the tips guys, much appreciated.
