5.0 GL oil pan replace - Volvo 385778 $299-359 or GM 10242245 $98

I have to replace a rotted oil sump. 2000 5.0GL PWTR motor - It has GM # 10242245 on it and I found a marine supply that sells it for $98. I have found the Volvo pan for $299-$359. Has anyone tried the GM pan? I may order anyway just to take a chance - that's a big difference in price.

Welcome to iboats.
Unless the pan was specifically made to fit your hull, I doubt the Volvo pan is anything more than a GM pan with a higher price.

Compare your new pan to what you pull out both externally and internally. If it looks the same, then go for it!

It doesn't look like anything special unless the oil drain thread is unique - which I doubt. I have googled that GM PN# 10242245 and it comes back as a GM marine in various discussions.

Yep. It's realistically probably nothing more than a GM truck pan. I wouldn't think twice about using it as long as it fits.

The Volvo pan may have different threads in order to accomodate the dipstick tube fittings that thread into the bottom of the pan.

If you are the type of person that can take the current pan off --- put the two pans side by side (after buying the GM general one) and see the differences and adapt whatever might be different to make the new one work --- then GO FOR IT
If you are the person that needs an exact, zero risk replacement -- then that is what you are paying the price for to get one from Volvo.

Before you put a new one on, make sure the paint is perfect with no chips. I would even consider putting another coat of paint on it.

Ok to answer all your questions (I am a machinist and motorcycle shop owner)

I am ordering the GM pan sight unseen online - there are no photos that I have found yet of that GM pan. I have seen the Volvo pan photos online and it is the correct one.
The original is just a pan with no windage tray built in. The windage tray is bolted to the block under the crank. I can check it side by side no problem.

I do not see why the Volvo pan would have unique threads as it would be easier to manufacture a dipstick tube bolt to fit the pan, instead of making a custom pan with motor order from GM.

I was just asking if anyone had knowledge of this before I placed the order. Thanks for the input.

I would even venture to say the Merc pan is the same also and its less than the Volvo pan. I will update to what I find.

Back when I replaced a pan on an OMC 5.0, different year OMC pans actually had different threads as they changed the thread pattern between years. I could not find a chevrolet pan to match up to these pans. I actually bought a GM pan like you did and ended up returning it. Hopefully, they are more standard now.

Mercruiser doesn't use the same dipstick setup as Volvo as Volvo allows you to hook up a pump directly to the end of the dipstick tube to suck the oil out.

You are correct about Volvo vs Merc dipstick setup. The thread in the Volvo pan is 12mm x 1.75 pitch which is a common GM drain plug thread. The Merc drain hose adapter also happens to be 12mm x 1.75. I have my fingers crossed.
