Picked up that 5.0 Vortec last night. Started pulling parts from the old motor as well. Bout to build a gantry too unfortunately. In my previous post there was a couple varying opinions on swapping the cam or not. What benefits do I gain by swapping over to my marine cam from my old motor? Can I swap the cam in this motor without pulling the heads? Also is there any benefit in swapping the heads or does Vovlo just keep the stock heads on there anyway when they build them out? Is it mainly the gaskets that matter when it comes to the heads?

Thank you,

Ayuh,..... As I said in yer other thread, a dead stock GM truck cam is the same as the dead stock boat cam,....
Ditto the heads,.....
The head Gaskets, 'n the core plugs are what I would change, so long as the stock GM core plugs were steel,....

Ok cool and the head gaskets were optional given that I want to drop a better motor in over the winter anyway? Will the stock GM head gaskets go for sure or might I get lucky? What are the major differences?

These core plugs seem to be brass for some reason. The one even has a patina to it. Unless im wrong?

Could be cad plating. Check with a magnet

Good call. Good news too. Zero stickage. Magnet pulls to the block like glue. No pull whatsoever on every core plug

Id do yourself a favor and swap the head gaskets to marine too. Yes you could use it for some time before there are issues, and you plan to replace the engine again this winter.… you might find yourself happy with it as is or not get to the hop up replacement. Much easier to do now when its out if you do the engine again sell this engine as a complete running marine engine…
