5.0 ltr. merc. surging

1989 merc. first time running this year. was winterized at marina in the fall was running alright before that.it wouldn't idle at first but it will idle now .as soon as you get rpms up in forward it will surge rpms going from 1200 to 1600 etc.it will go into reverse gear but when you give it the gas to speed it up it stalls.it always starts again no problem any ideas .boat is not in water yet.

When was the last Tune-Up,..??

My 1st Guess would be Fuel Filters....

the main large fuel filter was changed last fall.

Ayuh,....

I bet you're using your Back Button,.....
Use the Refresh Button,+ you'll quit Double Posting......

Change the Filter again,... Dump the contents into a clear vessel,+ observe whether there's contamination...

it was fuel problem as suspected i put a container of fuel system cleaner in fuel tank and ran it a while 2 days then next day sprayed can of carb. cleaner in every hole i could see in carb while it was running it cleared up right a way.i had to adjust interupter switch to stop reverse stalling ihd it frigged up trying to adjust shift cable. it idles perfect now also shifts perfect and accelerates.ithink i am ready for the water .thanks for the help.
