5.0 Mercruiser Alpha - 1993-130 hrs- What Preventative steps to take?

I have recently bought a fresh water hardly used 93 Cobalt with a 130 hours on a 5.0 Merc with an Alpha outdrive. Being in the Boston area the dealers can't wait to get me in for an "appointment" at $100 per hour plus parts. What are the things that I can do as a former back yard car mechanic, with plans to become well versed in outdrive maintenance to keep her well running without paying through the nose? Are there any websites you can recommend?

I am a novice boater/backyard mechanic myself. I have a Mercruiser 5.7 Alpha One. If you go through the forum, you'll see all of my questions. Here is what I have learned:<br />1. Change the impeller in the outdrive. Do it now. Don't wait. (Also replace the fluids in it with the good stuff) Outdrives are very expensive to replace, but relatively easy to maintain.<br />2. Every 5th thread on this forum is an overheat problem. Again, see my threads, as I am recovering from one now. Take off the risers. It's only 4 bolts (you'll need to get new gaskets). Inspect them for crud. There shouldn't be any. Take a look at the manifolds while there. Again, no crud.<br />3. Replace the thermostat. Again, you're not overheating, but change it now and you'll know its new. It's 10 bucks and about 15 minutes of labor.<br />4. Check all the cooling hoses.<br />5. Regular tune up stuff. Plugs, wires, rotor, cap, oil. If you use a pump to get out the oil, be careful not to overfill. There will be some oil left in the pan, I don't care how good the pump is.<br />6. Inspect the trim unit. Make sure its full with fluid, no leaks.<br /><br />I could go on for hours. But these are things I had to learn and wish someone told me to do last year!<br /><br />Hope it helps...Ted

Ted, Thanks for the advice...I think this might be a bit much on my first go around. I will need to get a friend ( maybe a paid friend) to help me. Are you aware of any networks of mechanics who work off the clock to do this sort of thing?

Mark-invest $30 in a repair manual-Clymer # B742...you'll get good step-by-step instructions and pictures,wiring diagrams,etc

Mark, save for the impeller, all the stuff Ted mentioned is incredibly easy to do and requires very little tools/effort. You don't need a mechanic, just get you a Clymer manual and go to it.

I will get the manual...thanks for the encouragement..How long should it take to replace the impeller which seems the deepest concern.

Ask the previous owner if he ever ran the boat without water to the lower unit (on the hose muffs). If he ran it dry at any time for more than 5 seconds, replace the impeller. If he always used the hose, I would not worry about it. How was the boat laid up after each season? If it was filled with anti-freeze---flush it out with the hose, do the tune up, change the engine and drive oil (maybe the trip pump oil too) and go have fun!

Ted's advice is spot on. Make darn sure to get the manifolds and risers squared away. If you are going to lose an engine this season that will be the likely cause. <br /><br />Buy a copy of Denis Moore's book "Small-Block Chevy Marine Performance" or at least read the preview of it on Amazon. Lot's of good basic info there.<br /><br />If this is your first powerboat buy a copy of the book "Getting Started in Power Boating"<br /><br />Here are a few very good sites for you to do some reading:<br /><br /> Mercruiser Exhaust Tips at Outdrives.com <br /><br /> How do I.... <br /><br />How-To-Do-It<br /><br />Where are you on the North Shore - I know several marine mechanics
