I have a mercruiser 5.0 with an alpha 1 gen II. seems to work fine in forward (by the way this is on muffs), but when put in reverse and try to throttle it stalls.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks
Dave

Would you please expand on that..... what exactly is binding? Is this a tedious job... must the outdrive and be disassembled? I would look in my manual but left it at work.

Not something that could just be out of adjustment?

Thanks

FYI......... The lower unit is a reman and was replaced by a novice, so could it be something to do with that, maybe not adjusted properly, etc..?

Please advise.

can't imagine that the drive itself is causing this, the shift adjustment is done on the shift plate mounted on the motor, not in the drive.

did the novice reman the drive too or just install it?

start with replacing the lower shift cable and adjust, can be done, read up in the manual and follow the steps

Try checking out the post below it worked for me after pulling my drive I had problems with the shifting. I adjusted using the procedure and testing on the lake and adjusted a little more until I got a good shift.

I think he just installed the lower unit.

Re: 5.0 mercruiser Alpha1 Stalls in reverse

Just wanted to update on this......

Adjusting the linkage fixed the stalling...... but go the boat to the lake and immediately started to take on water..... pulled it out....... put it back in and looked around hull, couldn't see where it was coming from. Did another inspection of the bellows.... found the shift boot ripped. Now have all apart.
