5.0 mercruiser fuel problem?

went out yesterday on my 1988 5.0l 19 footer and it ran fine for about 30 min or so. then i was running at about 4200 rpms and it started to slow down and then speed back up on its own. almost like it was running out of gas and then surging back up when enough got back in the carb. i put a new fuel water seperator and a fuel filter in it. same thing though. i don't know...... fuel pump? any suggestions?

Could be water in the system, could be plugged screen on the fuel pickup tube in the tank, plugged antisiphon, plugged tank vent. Time to start testing. Along with a filter check, and a fuel pump pressure check. You should look at the boats fuel system.<br />Read this thread.
