Hi all,

I have a 2008 5.0 MPI Merc.
Sometimes (not always and I cannot make it do it) when coming off the throttle hard it dies. 2800-3000 RPM to idle (Skier falls - 2 or 3 times)
I have Also noticed it do this 2 times when trying to trailer the boat, give it a little pump of gas real quick and pull back and it will die.

At first I thought I might be pulling it back past the neutral spot, but I really don't think I am. Matter of fact I'm not 100 % sure I have pulled it all the way into neutral when it dies.

I ran it every day for 2 week and it only did it once in that , and only did it 4 or 5 times this year had it out a total of 21 days. But either way it just doesn't seem right.

This is my first year with the boat had 69 Hours on it when I got it, Not sure how many I put on this year. I Need to add an hour meter to it, so I don't have to have it plugged in at a Merc dealer.

Any thoughts at all would be appreciated.

The description does sound like either a shifting issue or an IAC not keeping up maybe due to a dirty throttle body, flame arrestor or IAC muffler if your engine model has one.

I'll check the throttle body to see if its dirty. As far as shifting to slow.. it's when I'm pulling from a 3000 rpm quickly to forward knotch or right before neutral. is it because I'm not come straight back into the neutral knotch but pulling it back and leaving it in forward knotch? I'm confused on that part

Ayuh,..... When ya pull back to the forward detent, that's idle speed, forward gear,....

The throttle cables stops movin' at that point, 'n the shift cable only, moves 'tween the 3 detents, forward, neutral, 'n reverse,....

Pull back to the 1st detent, 'n stop,... Then go to neutral if ya what, Briskly,....
As the cables shifts, it triggers the shift switch, if ya laly-gag, it "Could" stall the motor,...
