Due to a badly cracked block I am going to replace my engine.engine - 502fthrcra j 817500
outdrive - 983488 j 357885. 1984 Bayliner Capri 5.0 I have the Seloc Manual I need, but it doesn't say too much about removal. Is there anything specific I need to know before I continue? Is there anything I should do to the outdrive while the engine is out? I have pics of the boat and engine/drive but I can't figure out how to attach them. I would also like to thank everyone for all the excellent info. on this forum. The answers to at least a dozen questions i've had we're easy to find and very helpful. thanks.

Seems the after market manuals are not much help to the average boat owner. I suspect you will get plenty of advise along the lines of "get the genuine workshop manual" Unfortunately the after market stuff tell you they have everything covered but they rarely deliver on the promise.
Good luck.

It's been awhile, but pull the drive, then pull the engine and intermediate housing as one.Don't forget to remove the shift cable with the drive, and disconnect the transom seal from the intermediate housing.Of corse all wires etc.

Because of the shift cable,I strongly reccomend a factory service manual.

DHP

Get ready for some grunt work.

Like DHP said, pull the drive first. Take your time removing the cap bolts. Have a torch handy and plenty of PB Blaster.

You have to remove the shift cable from the assist module before un-bolting the drive. A second set of hands is a real plus for fishing the cable through the intermediate housing. Lube up that opening real good... it will help alot in pulling that cable through. That cable is worth it's weight in gold, so, go slowly, and treat it with kid gloves.

I pulled my engine in two hours. We'll watch the thread for your progress. Good luck!
