5.0 water intrusion... What happened?

Hello!

5.0 Merc 2002 (220hp), carbed, saltwater. The engine blew a valve & piston and was rebuilt. It also got a new set of stainless exhaust manifolds. It worked for like 10 hours without a problem, then it started to knock hard. When we took it apart, here is what we saw:

- water in exhaust manifolds
- all 4 cylinders on the left side were cleaned by steam (water in cylinders)
- the intake (left side) was full of oil foam & the canals were rusty (signs of saltwater)
- the level of oil in the oil pan raised by approx. 0.5-1cm (0,2 - 0,4 inch) & was milky

Now... I can't imagine what happened... If a manifold fails, the water comes to the cylinders, but how did it get to the intake??? Why did the oil level rise?? (it usually does when the block cracks)... The knock was caused by a lifter (so i presume)

Well, I need a new longblock, but if i order from rapidomarine, I don't want to risk another water intrusion... I already ordered new exhaust manifolds (classical), any other things i should pay attention to?

Any help is HIGHLY appreciated

Thanx

Alex

A cracked intake manifold? leaking intake manifold gaskets, at the water passage?
