Our 2008 5.0L Merc developed a rather concerning ticking noise coming from the port side at idle to roughly 2,000 rpm. There are 115 hours on the original engine. Annual oil/filter changes with Merc oil.
Had a few mechanics listening to it. Some said valve train noise, power steering pump, exhaust flapper, etc. Not convinced, I started checking things out. First, I took some oil out as it was slightly over full. No change. At idle, I slid my hand down the outside of the exhaust manifold at #1 cyl and felt a pulsation of hot air. When I took off the exhaust manifold, it was obvious that the exhaust manifold gasket had blown out creating an exhaust leak. After replacing the gasket, the ticking noise is gone. I can now just barely hear the injectors firing.
On another forum, there is mention of a Merc TSB advising of improper port side manifold bolt torque during assembly. Oops.
