Just bought a '62 5.5 Evinrude at an auction, replaced deteriorated coils (aligned heels with machined areas on mag plate, motor now runs excellent, but seems like magnets are real strong on flywheel, when you pull over, mag plate will pull throttle to off, and when you idle down real slow mag plate moves back and forth if you hold the throttle, if you don't hold throttle it will rotate throttle to off. I have a 73 6 hp that I did the same thing to last yr. and it is as smooth as could be. Can' find any kind of friction adjustment for throttle. Any thoughts??

Re: 5.5 'Rude Jerky Magneto?

Hi Cabin,
I am guessing that the armature base is worn a bit and the armature is simply too loose on the base. I am talking about the boss itself - machined into the top of the crankcase. Joe Reeves had a neat fix for a loose armature where he uses an awl punch to make several equally spaced dimples in the contact surface to increase the friction and get rid of the wobble. When your magneto is moving around like that it also affects the point gap, so it's well worth the fix. I think that if you do a search on Joe's posts you'll see it spelled out in more detail...
- Scott
